I Hope They’ve Got A Big Enough Ice Box

The Whale Hunt

The Whale Hunt is a fascinating online photo-documentary project by photographer Jonathan Harris wherein he joined in with a group of Inupiat Eskimos in Alaska as they set about on their annual traditional whale hunt. This whale hunt is the only whale hunting allowed under United States law and is conducted using traditional methods that date back 1000 years to provide food to the Inupiat.

Harris took a photo every five minutes beginning with his departure for Alaska and all the way through the butchering of the second whale caught by the group. You can view the pictures as a slide show, along a timeline, or as part of an interactive matrix. Some of the images are fairly mundane, others compelling, and when taken together represent his own personal view of the events in a way that a more typical photographic essay probably would not.
