As it happens, the fish oil supplement I take also includes flaxseed and borage oils, so it covers all 3 Omega fatty acids. Thanks for the link.

I can only imagine how worrisome it could get to take all those medications. Right, all those prescription could weaken you physically, make you feel weary and old (as mentioned by Shelley) with narcotic substances taking its toll on the gut and the body's immune defenses. I feel for you guys and I do hope that you'll be free from those meds soon. Just want to share about the health benefits of ground flax seed, and how it could be a tastier and more versatile alternative to fish oil. Same with fish oil, ground flax seed also helps with depression, metabolism and cardiovascular ailments. Below is an article on flax seed and its health benefits.

You will also want to read this story in the NYT, which takes the more conventional medical standpoint in regard to the Zetia/Vytorin study.

Ah, yes, the nightstand as pharmacy; I know whereof you speak. (And is it really 3.5 years?! Awesome.) Sometimes I feel, at age 42, like a very old woman as I pop all my prescriptions and supplements each day. I'm taking one anti-depressant (previously, two), an ADD drug (3 pills/day), a prescription multi-vitamin with extra iron for anemia (it's essentially a prenatal vitamin, but I assure you I'm not expecting), a sublingual B-12 (to help counteract the low energy from anemia and depression), and Protonix for reflux (this I no longer need daily). Also, I've been experiencing back pain in the past week, so I'm taking 2-3 extra strength Tylenol a couple of times a day. I'd take ibuprofen, which is generally better for muscular pain, but I can't take NSAIDS due to gastric bypass. I am going to read up on the benefits of fish oil supplements and will seriously consider adding those to my routine as a result of your remarks. I'm also going to urge my mom to discuss the statin controversy with her doctor, 'cause she's been taking one or another of those for a number of years, too. Thanks for the helpful and interesting info.

Thank you for sharing your experiences with your medications. Medications affect every individual differently, but I am sorry to hear that you have struggled with yours.

I hasten to mention that I am only taking ibuprofen for a few days to help with a sore leg, not as any sort of long-term therapy, but I will keep that concern in mind.

Good luck to you.

I take 10 Rx drugs daily:
Aggrenox (a Thinner),
Januvia, Metformin and Glimeride (2 x day) for Diabetes.
Metoprolol Tartrate (2 x day), Hyzaar (2 x day) and Clonidine (3 x day) for hypertension.
Crestor for Cholesterol.
Allopurinol for Gout.
Plus 2 injections of Byetta I started 1/13/08 to see if it helps to lower over 200 mg/dL readings.

I regularly go to an Endocronology, a Cardiologist, a Reumathologist, a Podiatrist, a Neurologist and a Retina Eye Specialist.

I used to take two prescribed 600mg Ibuprofens x day for OsteoArtrithis Pain for a period of about 3 months and it hurt my kidneys to the point that they are 30% less efficient now (irreversibe) and I cannot use pain medications any longer due to my kidneys condition.
I had to quit taking medications for my depression (Cymbalta) and Lyrica for my Fibromyalgia due to bad dreams and allucinations while sleeping.

I have taken MultiVit B & D supplements and Vitamin D suggested by my doctors. But I have quit since I found no improvements.

I only suggest that you carefully evaluate the use of pain and antidepressant drugs with a Diabetician MD.

I just turned 70 and live in Southern California, USA.
I had a stroke 3 years ago and lost my voice pitch, otherwise I was lucky.
I have a been a type 2 Diabetic since about 1980. I should exercise but due to my knee osteoartrithis I cannot.
Good luck.
