Girls Rock

From the time that Charlotte could first talk, her single most consistent answer to the question “What do you want to be when you grow up?” has been “a rock star”.
She is always full of stories about how she and her friends from school are all going to be in each others’ bands, who is going to play what instruments, what songs they’ll sing, and just about any other detail you might care to know about. Like practically every other female child under the age of 16, her current biggest interest is in the Hannah Montana phenomenon (Disney Princesses? Dude, that is SO two years ago around our house!), and her two most favorite Christmas gifts were undoubtedly the working microphone (complete with crowd cheering SFX) and the kid-sized “real” guitar. She entertains herself for hours singing into the mic, strumming the guitar, and playing the Hannah Montana Wii game.

We’ve let Charlotte try whatever strikes her fancy — dance lessons, swimming, soccer, tee-ball, gymnastics, skating, and currently theater — so I think it’s only fair that we let her take a crack at guitar lessons. Who knows, she might actually turn out to be musically inclined.

I came across a website recently for a documentary film called “Girls Rock”. It’s the story of the effort to launch a rock-and-roll music camp for girls a few years ago in Portland, Oregon and how that has grown into a national movement to launch similar camps all over the country. The film focuses on the stories of several girls ranging in age from 8 to 18 and their personal struggles, as well as the opportunity for them to discover their truest selves through the power of music. The movie is coming to Cambridge in May, and I definitely want to see it.

My friend sent her 15 year old to the Rock and Roll Camp for Girls in Portland in 2002 or 2003 and she LOVED it. Now that she’s an adult, she’s still doing rock and roll and involved in two bands. She still LOVES it. I say - remodel and heat your garage or basement then send Charlotte when she’s old enough!
