La Habanera

Everybody’s linking to the recent set of Muppet music videos that have popped up on YouTube, and this is my personal favorite of the ones I’ve seen: Beaker, Animal, and the Swedish Chef performing their rendition of the well-known Habanera from Bizet’s opera “Carmen”.

It’s not the first teaming of these three Muppets. They also performed this tear-jerking rendition of the classic “Danny Boy” many years ago on “The Muppet Show”.

The consensus seems to be that these videos are some sort of attempt by Disney to get a little viral marketing going for the Muppets, but nobody seems to know for sure what exactly they might be trying to promote. My feeling is that the Muppet Show characters suffer the loss of Jim Henson, Frank Oz (who retired from the Muppets when Disney bought them) and Richard Hunt even more than the Sesame Street Muppets and that they would do well to work on a new lineup of characters to gradually replace Kermit and the gang. These videos are very entertaining, but I can’t imagine watching the characters with their new performers for any extended length of time.
