The Sea Is A Hungry Place

You might have seen the news story yesterday that one of the crew of the Alaskan fishing vessel “Time Bandit”, which features prominently on the Discovery series “Deadliest Catch”, was found dead in a hotel room in Alaska. The cause of death is not yet known, though he was found with booze and drugs in the room. The crabbing fleet has apparently just finished its winter fishing season and had returned to port.

While it sounds like hard living caught up to this unfortunate young man, the dangers of the profession he belonged to are well-known, even to people who aren’t necessarily fans of the TV show. This n+1 magazine article from November of last year is a first-person account of the hardship of living and working on a fishing boat in the vast Bering Sea.

Pro-American

For the five or six of you who don’t watch The Daily Show, this must-watch clip features a little visit to the pro-America, family-values community of Wasilla, Alaska.

Toward the end of the clip, the current mayor of Wasilla demonstrates that she doesn’t have any better grip of what her own job is than Sarah Palin does. But she probably shouldn’t expect any help from her predecessor, who still really doesn’t have any idea what the Vice President does except spend a lot of money on clothing:

The Whale Hunt

The Whale Hunt is a fascinating online photo-documentary project by photographer Jonathan Harris wherein he joined in with a group of Inupiat Eskimos in Alaska as they set about on their annual traditional whale hunt. This whale hunt is the only whale hunting allowed under United States law and is conducted using traditional methods that date back 1000 years to provide food to the Inupiat.

Harris took a photo every five minutes beginning with his departure for Alaska and all the way through the butchering of the second whale caught by the group. You can view the pictures as a slide show, along a timeline, or as part of an interactive matrix. Some of the images are fairly mundane, others compelling, and when taken together represent his own personal view of the events in a way that a more typical photographic essay probably would not. Do You Think Any Of Them Aren’t Corrupt?

Ladies and gentlemen, this week, the congressional watchdog group CREW (Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington) announced their third annual report on the Most Corrupt Members of Congress.

This year they have named twenty-two senators and representatives to the list, along with two “dishonorable mentions”. The list includes 18 Republicans and 4 Democrats — four of them are senators, the rest representatives. Topping the list is none other than Senator Ted “A Series Of Tubes” Stevens of Alaska (Republican), who is the subject of a number of investigations, most notably for accepting bribes from a company called VECO. Yesterday it was revealed that the FBI has been secretly taping his phone conversations with the CEO of VECO, who has already admitted in court to bribing Stevens.

In fact, the entire Alaska Congressional delegation (two senators, one representative) is on this list for their involvement in any number of crimes and misdemeanors, and it’s looking like they could all go to jail.

There’s no eliminating petty corruption in politics — it’s the grease that keeps the wheels of government turning at every level from the smallest city council on up to the White House — but some of these people simply go beyond the pale.
