The Washington Post has this grab-bag of op-eds from a variety of commentators ranging from Elizabeth Warren to Turd Blossom to Ed Begley Jr.. The theme of the collection is “!2 Things The World Should Toss Out”, and several of them are about topics near and dear to my heart such as lawns, Internet memes, and bullshit political journalism.

You Know Things Are Really F’ed Up When…

…Alan Greenspan, who coined the phrase “irrational exuberance” and then spent the better part of a decade enabling it to continue, says this is “the worst economy he’s ever seen” (and he’s VERY, VERY OLD, so you know he’s seen a LOT)

…Karl Rove thinks your campaign ads lie too much.

…wearing a hand-tailored ermine-trimmed gown, Gucci sunglasses, and Prada loafers that were even more expensive than John McCain’s, Emperor Palpatine Pope Benedict XVI once again denounces materialism as “evil” in front of a stadium crowd of 250,000 believers, then returns to his marble palace filled with the world’s most expensive artworks to count his $5 billion fortune.

…your GOP campaign flacks are so full of shit that even FOX News tears them a new asshole live on television.

Democratic political operative James Carville offers his assessment of Karl Rove in this piece that appears in the Financial Times (via). His conclusion is not that Rove was a master strategist but rather by insisting on focusing on the extremist elements of the Republican party has managed to chase the “center” away, with many of them heading back to the Democrats.
Well, what did you THINK he was gonna say? But he’s not the only one saying it. This Economist editorial (which has gotten a lot of play on the web this week, too) echoes the same general argument: Rove has alienated too many people who aren’t so intensely committed to one party over another, and when combined with the nearly-comical litany of Republican sex and corruption scandals, the overall political mood of the country seems to be swinging away from the “House That Rove Built”. Unfortunately, the current crop of presidential candidates aren’t swing along with them, sticking to a more conservative consensus than public opinion warrants. Not unlike how the Detroit automakers always seem to be lagging a bit behind the trends that the Japanese car makers seem to appreciate better.
