Just A Little Fucking Ray Of Sunshine

This time it will kill us all, FOR SURE! We promise!

Recently, Asia Times ran this story recapping and analyzing what actually happened at Fukushima during the minutes of the March earthquake that led to the even greater disaster as the tsunami hit. The entire Fukushima site was in trouble with safety inspectors for years, coming to a head in 2002, but problems persisted for years afterward. Even without the one-two punch of the natural disasters, it seems likely from this story that a serious accident at Fukushima was merely a matter of time. Also, if you missed it last week, the IEEE has republished blog posts made by an anonymous cleanup worker who operates a robot in the facility to remove materials where the radiation is too high for humans. The posts, which were extremely critical of TEPCO management of the cleanup operations, were deleted from their original website after drawing attention, but the IEEE recovered the posts and republished them to much attention. Last week, Naoto Kan, the prime minister of Japan, resigned because of criticism of the government’s handling of the crisis.

If you get your news from the American news media, you probably didn’t hear this tidbit: the U.S. government has negotiated an agreement to leave up to 25,000 troops in Afghanistan until 2024. You hear a lot about the troops coming home in 2014, but not so much about the “special advisors” staying for at least another full decade in the single biggest waste of money and materiel in the history of humankind. That, of course, presumes that we haven’t completely bankrupted ourselves before then.

PZ Meyers had this story about a “pastor” who thinks it would be great if there could be a national registry of all of us atheists just like they have for “convicted sex offenders, ex-convicts, terrorist cells…” and other undesirables. It would be for “information purposes”:

Now , many (especially the atheists ) , may ask “Why do this , what’s the purpose ?” Duhhh , Mr. Atheist , for the same purpose many States put the names and photos of convicted sex offenders and other ex-felons on the I-Net – to INFORM the public ! I mean , in the City of Miramar , Florida , where I live , the population is approx. 109,000 . My family and I would sure like to know how many of those 109,000 are ADMITTED atheists ! Perhaps we may actually know some . In which case we could begin to witness to them and warn them of the dangers of atheism . Or perhaps they are radical atheists , whose hearts are as hard as Pharaoh’s , in that case , if they are business owners , we would encourage all our Christian friends , as well as the various churches and their congregations NOT to patronize them as we would only be “feeding” Satan .

Gee, wouldn’t it just be easier if we all wore a patch or something?

Former BBC producer Jo Glanville has written an in-depth piece for the London Review of Books chronicling the battle over the future of one of the (if not THE) pre-eminent broadcasting institutions, the BBC World Service. While the mission of the World Service unquestionably needs to be re-evaluated in the era of the Internet, British domestic politics may have more to do with its fate than the information age.

Anything else I can help you feel bad about today? I’ve got plenty of links.

Matters Of Life And Death

Well this sounds familiar to me: well-known atheist blogger PZ Meyers found himself whisked into the hospital suddenly for heart problems over the weekend, and today he tells us about his angiogram, complete with Jawas and a giant floating head. I gotta tell you that I was a lot more lucid for my procedure six years ago; I’ll never forget the truly creepy sensation of feeling the cath being ratcheted up into my heart and the “skreetch-skreetch-skreetch” noise it made inside me. Best wishes to PZ for his speedy recovery.

Did you know that the third leading cause of mortality in the United States is medical treatment? Nearly a quarter of a million people are killed in this country every year by a combination of medical errors, unnecessary surgery, and hospital-acquired infection. This recent NYT article goes into detail about a particular problem: the difficulty in distinguishing between the many and varied plastic tubes that get used often results in hooking things up incorrectly, thus killing people by giving them lethal drugs, blocking their airways, or even pumping food into their veins.

This Popular Science article reports that researchers have found a way to engineer RNA in such a way that it stops protein production in cells, thus preventing those cells from reproducing, and they have begun testing this technique as a way to stop liver cancer from spreading. Because the technique can be applied to many different types of cells, it may eventually be an effective treatment for a variety of diseases, but they need to develop a more precise method for targeting just the diseased cells.

From the Department of Don’t Worry, Be Happy comes the news that bad thoughts can kill! Cynicism, “lack of meaning”, fretting, lack of self control, anxiety, pessimism, and stress are the seven deadly sins in this article. No wonder I’m headed for an early grave!

Also:

P.Z. Myers posts that there’s new evidence that Human Papilloma Virus may cause oral cancers in men as well as cervical cancer in women and that there is discussion about recommending the Gardasil vaccine for men. The fundie freakshow crowd opposes giving Gardasil to teenage girls on the premise that it will contribute to them becoming promiscuous. What will they say when their doctors tell them to vaccinate their teenage sons, too?

An Atheist’s Creed

I believe in time,
matter, and energy,
which make up the whole of the world.

I believe in reason, evidence and the human mind,
the only tools we have;
they are the product of natural forces
in a majestic but impersonal universe,
grander and richer than we can imagine,
a source of endless opportunities for discovery.

I believe in the power of doubt;
I do not seek out reassurances,
but embrace the question,
and strive to challenge my own beliefs.

I accept human mortality.

We have but one life,
brief and full of struggle,
leavened with love and community,
learning and exploration,
beauty and the creation of
new life, new art, and new ideas.

I rejoice in this life that I have,
and in the grandeur of a world that preceded me,
and an earth that will abide without me.

As seen today at Pharyngula, presumably written by P.Z. Myers (he doesn’t credit anyone else), in response to some nonsense cartoon he found online where another devout believer pities those poor atheists who can’t go to heaven. Atheists spend so much time having to be on the defensive, it’s nice to read something that sums things up so positively.
