The buzz around here over the “Clam Chowder Flavor” ramen noodles has still not died down. So, to make up for that foodie faux pas, let’s take a moment to ooh and aah over this dish, shall we?

Ooh! Aah!

This dish is called mie goreng and comes from Indonesia. “Mie goreng” simply means “fried noodles” in Indonesian, and therefore there’s no canonical recipe for it. It’s the sort of thing every street vendor sells in places like Singapore and Kuala Lumpur and makes according to their own recipe. Typically, it uses yellow egg noodles, and usually features a fried egg on top, but everything else is up to the chef. The mie goreng in the picture above is using ramen noodles (or a similar Chinese style) as a substitute. Wikipedia offers this link to a mie goreng recipe on Recipezaar that sounds quite serviceable.

The picture above has quite a provenance. I found it here, on a blog by a Mutual Friend of Torrez. He credits this food photo site (which has lots of food porn to drool over, BTW). That site, in turn, credits this Flickr page, which is also part of this set of great-looking food photos very honestly entitled “Food Porn & Drinx” (the author is a bit too fond of cutesy spelling and capitalization, but makes up for it with the pictures).

I’ll cop to being on a streak of eating instant ramen noodles for lunch a couple of times a week these days. I also like to visit the Porter Square Exchange and have a huge bowl of authentic ramen soup from one of the Japanese food stalls occasionally. Now I think I’ll need to dig out my wok and cook up a little mie goreng for lunch one day next week. If I do, I’ll post pix.
