That’s a picture of a prototype of a very tiny PC that a group called the Raspberry Pi Foundation hopes to turn into a real product that could be sold for about $25. It has 128MB of memory, which is enough to run some flavor of Linux, and would rely on an SD card for storage (presently they go up to 32GB). There’s only one USB port, but you could presumably connect a small hub so you could attach a keyboard and a mouse and maybe even a USB WiFi adapter (since there’s no built-in networking). It would be cool if they do end up being able to bring this to the market for such a small price point, but everything about it reminds me of the hype that went into the OLPC seven or eight years ago. Meanwhile, by the time they do get it to market, smartphones will have replaced PCs anyway.

While we’re talking about tiny tech, here’s a story from Singularity Hub about video cameras the size of a grain of salt that can be used for endoscopy (among other uses) and are intended to be disposable. They’ll probably end up embedded in so many different things your head will explode, but at least there will be plenty of pictures of that moment to share on Facebook.

Aaaand, speaking of ubiquitous cameras and their myriad uses…here’s ANOTHER Singularity Hub post that wonders why we STILL don’t like to engage in video chatting, even though it’s gotten to be essentially free and trivial to set up. If you figure it out, I’m sure the folks at MicroSkype would love to hear it.

Fast Company reports that PBS conducted a survey of iPad users with children as part of their effort to develop some iPad apps and discovered that 70% of them are willing to let their small children play with their iPads and regularly download apps specifically for the kids to play with. Like their headline implies, this really only reaffirms one of the main criticisms leveled at the iPad: that it is simply a toy, albeit a 500-dollar toy. The school board in my hometown might want to take notice of this.

Speaking of tablet computers (man, I am just FULL of segues today), next week Barnes & Noble are expected to announce the next generation of their Nook e-reader (since all of us left behind from the Rapture will have plenty of spare time to catch up on our reading), and Ars Technica recently speculated on what that announcement might entail. Their guess is that it’s a refresh of the original e-ink Nook and not the more advanced color Nook, which lately is everybody’s favorite cheap way to get a tablet computer.

Lastly, British tech news website The Register, who win the award for most frequent non-ironic use of the word “Boffin”, says that it looks like Cisco is going to unload the Linksys home router business as part of the same realignment strategy that saw them discontinue the Flip videocamera a couple of weeks ago. I know the home wireless router business isn’t what it used to be since the cable companies that provide Internet service to most American homes now incorporate wireless routers right into their cable modem devices, but you gotta think that somebody would pick that up.

Don’t Let The Valet Take The Key

Earlier this year, Cisco finally did away with the Linksys brand name on their home wireless networking gear (they had acquired Linksys all the way back in 2003). They added some swoopy industrial design, redid the configuration UI to be “easier”, renamed the product the “Cisco Valet”, and jacked up the price of a basic home wireless router from about $75 to $129.

My blog-buddy “Going Like Sixty” found himself of a new router the other day and bought one on the premise that it would be very simple to set up, but, as he tells us here, any visions of “breezing through the simple screens” quickly disappeared into that sucking morass known as “Bangalore Tech Support Madness”. He’s a little bitter about the whole thing.

Frankly, I’m having a hard time imagining why the marketeering geniuses at Cisco thought setting up a wireless router needed to be “easier”, since wireless routers have been probably the simplest bit of home computer tech ever created. In fact, they have been, to some degree, TOO easy because it has always been possible to just plug one in and have it work with very little intervention required, with the result being tons of home wireless networks being set up with nobody ever changing the default admin passwords or implementing the built-in (and equally simple-to-enable) encryption. And now most people don’t even need to bother with their own wireless router, since the cable companies wised up and built them right into their cable modems. Jacking the price and alienating the technically-disinclined doesn’t really seem like a great business plan…but, then again, we are talking about Cisco.

Linkapalooza – Sci/Tech

Gizmodo reports that NASA has released this pair of images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope a couple of years ago. As you can see, a fairly substantial object instantaneously appeared in a portion of space that the telescope was pointed at while looking for supernovae. It increased in magnitude over the period of 100 days, then faded away back to nothingness in the same amount of time. According to the scientists who wrote this up for the Astrophysical Journal, the object did not match any known pattern for a supernova, is inconsistent with gravitational microlensing, and does not match any known object in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey database.

Maybe the Vogons finally got all the necessary permits for that hyperspace bypass after all. Do you know where your towel is?

DSL Reports says that scientists at the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa, Italy have successfully tested a wireless network technology capable of a throughput speed of 1.2 terabits per second. That utterly shatters the previous record, which was 160Gbps. By comparison, your typical home wireless network running 802.11g (which is soon to be superseded by 802.11n) crawls along at 19 megabits per second, literally about a billion times slower. The technology uses a combination of optical and radio transceivers, where present conventional wireless networking is entirely radio-based. The first practical use for such technology is hoped to be inter-satellite communication, but before you know it, you’ll be able to pick up one of these babies at Circuit City for 69 bucks.

Okay, if that link wasn’t geeky enough for you, this one is guaranteed to make your eyes roll back in your head: it’s an Ars Technica interview with Tim Sweeney, the guy who developed the Unreal 3D graphics engine and co-founded Epic Games. Having just spent the better part of an entire weekend frigging around with replacing the graphics card in my computer so that I would be able to play Spore, this article caught my eye. The subject of the interview is his view that gaming PCs are going to swing away from big fat GPUs (graphics processing units) on motherboards and graphics cards and back towards processing all graphics right in the CPU itself. The advent of the GPU was a big, big deal for high-speed three-dimensional rendering when it first emerged in the ’90s — it took lots of load off the CPU, which could then be given over to other tasks, and it created a particular paradigm of graphics processing that has taken the animation of computer games from the clunky styles of yesteryear to the near-flawless rendering you see today. But, Sweeney argues, the multi-core processor is ready to take back graphics and do an even better job with improved software-based rendering. The best part is that you won’t even need a tricked-out gamer PC to achieve all of this; even laptops will come with the processing power necessary to render 3D graphics flawlessly soon enough.

Back to outer space for a minute…remember that Gamma Ray Burst that was so powerful it was visible to the naked eye? You don’t? Well, I posted about it when it happened. You just weren’t paying attention. A few days ago, astronomer and blogger Phil Plait filled in some of the details about just how close we all came to being crispy-crittered by the aforementioned GRB. Let’s just say we wouldn’t have had to worry about the Large Hadron Collider, if this thing had been a few billion miles closer, mm-kay?

A sign of the times: The University of Kentucky has decided to yank all the land-line telephones wired into dorm rooms on their campus because students have abandoned using them in favor of cellphones, IM and other modern communications devices. I can still remember standing in line for what seemed like a bazillon years as a freshman at Northwestern to get signed up for an account with Illinois Bell. Every dorm room at NU had (has?) a landline, and rare was the pair of roommates who did not have their own telephone. By comparison, my friends who went to University of Maine didn’t have in-room phones, and it was always a crapshoot trying to call them on the one public-use phone in their dorm lounge. We’d have to coordinate a call-time via letters (yes, snail-mail! It took a week and a half to arrange a 10-minute phone call once a month!).

Another sign of the times: while UK students might have traded landlines for iPhones, their iPhones are spying on them. This Wired blog post discusses a little-publicized bit of information about the iPhone: the clever way it returns you to the exact place you left off when you turned off your phone is by caching screenshots every time the screen changes. That cache persists in the iPhone’s memory, and, according to one hacker, can be accessed by anyone savvy enough to find the cache, not the least of whom are the assorted phone-tapping intelligence people George Bush keeps on hand to “fight terrorism”. Your entire history of activity on the iPhone, not just your phone calls, can be completely traced. So whatever you do, the next time you plan to blow up the World Trade Center, don’t call Osama on your iPhone, got it?

Faster Than A Speeding Bullet

Via Slashdot comes this NetworkWorld story about IBM dipping their toes into the emerging development of high-speed wireless data transfer technologies to address the market for home video servers.

This particular technology, which is called “Terabeam”, has the advantage of being substantially faster than any other solution being touted for this purpose. As that last link tells you, the 60GHz wavelength is capable of supporting data throughput speeds that are 100 times faster than WiFi — in other words, essentially the wireless equivalent of Gigabit Ethernet.

Compare that to another emerging wireless device technology, Ultra-Wide Bandwidth (UWB), which has been incorporated into the WiMedia USB spec. At one point in the earlier stages of UWB development, it had been considered for possible use in wireless home networking, but its throughput speed is 450Mbps. It appears that UWB’s future has been consolidated around working as a possible successor to Bluetooth as a wireless connection for peripherals, where the data communication speed would not be throttled by a big transfer such as a video file. But the “Terabeam” technology seems ideal for pushing big files around small wireless network environments.

Many people, particularly the all-important 18-29 demographic, have forsworn landline phones at home in favor of using their cellphone as their primary telephone. However, cellular reception can be spotty, making cell phones less than 100% reliable for that purpose. Meanwhile, the popularity of home wireless networking has also made it de rigeur for the same crowd. So the clever folks at Ericsson have devised a combo wireless unit that transmits 802.11g WiFi and the two most common cellular services in the US, GSM and WCDMA. Thus your wireless network access point can also act as a booster for your cellular signal at home. It also acts as a modem for your DSL broadband service.

The actual intended customer for this convergence device is not the home user per se, but rather the various companies competing for your dollar as an all-in-one service provider. By simplifying your connectivity down to a single box, this gives the non-cable broadband providers a way to bundle up several services into one. Don’t be surprised to read in the near future that some electronics maker has done the same thing with coax instead of twisted-pair so that the cable companies can do the same thing.
